Sean Boswell är en temperamentsfull gaturacare som hamnar i konflikt med polisen. För att undvika fängelse skickas han att bo med sin buttre pappa, en karriärsmilitär stationerad i Tokyo. Där blir det action värre när han träffar amerikanen Twinkie, som introducerar honom för drift racing. Första gången han drift racar utmanar han ovetandes the Drift Racing King, en lokal mästare med förbindelser i det japanska brottsmaskineriet Yakuza. Men det är först när Sean faller för D.K: s flickvän, som det verkligen blir fart och fläkt.
